<body><![CDATA[While in Florence Raphael met Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, out of whose influences he distilled his own unmistakable style. The landscape is reminiscent of Leonardo, as are the soft gradations from light to dark on the skin and the clothes of the figures. But thereΓÇÖs another influence at work here, that of the Umbrian master Perugino, from whose style and methods the young Raphael learnt a great deal. The painting is signed on the VirginΓÇÖs bosom, ΓÇ£Raffaello Urbinas MDVIIΓÇ¥ (Raphael of Urbino 1507). This relatively small painting was probably created for private devotion. It is unusual in showing the infant Christ riding on a lamb's back. The animal, a sacrificial beast, is, of course, meant to remind us of ChristΓÇÖs own sacrifice and his role as a metaphorical shepherd.]]></body>
